Making my way through this. Highly recommended, especially if you haven’t seen most of this stuff. I forgot how crazy the Chigaco street fight is, especially the ending, which is one of the most brutal you will ever see.

So it seems like we could be getting a CM Punk vs. Jerry Lawler. Most people are probably thinking to themselves, “Man, I really don’t want to see an old Lawler wrestle.” Well, I do. Why? Because the man still knows how to make a good match. Example: his TLC match with Miz from November 2010, the night after the Miz shockingly cashed in MITB. On paper, this match seems terrible- an old Lawler in a match that he is not suited for at all. But you know what? It is actually pretty awesome. If we get a match like this again Punk, I’d be very happy.

Have you ever seen a match where the commentary makes you care about it more? Like, the match is whatever, but the commentary really makes it good? Well, this is the #1 all-time example of that: Royal Rumble 92. Heenan MAKES this match. It is a pretty incredible example of what good commentary can really accomplish (unlike what is going on these days). This is the best Rumble for sure. If you’ve never seen it, it is should be required watching.

I’d say that this is a top 10 WWE match of the past 5 years. You have Jericho, who was at his best ever in 2008/2009, and Mysterio, one of the best ppure babyfaces in history. The combination rules. Tons of cool spots, it is laid out well, it is just great.

One more Sekimoto match, this one against Yoshihito Sasaki....

One more Sekimoto match, this one against Yoshihito Sasaki. This is a definitely MOTYC. Super stiff, great story of the younger guy trying to overcome the veteran, it is just awesome. Worth watching for sure.

It’s been a little while since I posted a good match, which I’m sorry for. Luckily this one is awesome! Daisuke Sekimoto is one of the best in the world, especially as far as “strong style” dudes go. Basically, he hits hard and is a tank. His partner, Okabayashi, is pretty similar. On the other side, Soya is another strongstyle guy, and Hama is just really fat. The combination is great. Definitely worth watching, especially if you aren’t familiar was Sekimoto.

So Aries vs. Roode last night was the best TNA match in ages. It was pretty incredible. I gave up on TNA “for good” after Bound for Glory last year, but it has been decent recently, so I was excited for the PPV. The match was pretty awesome, the build was perfect, and Aries winning the belt is exactly what needed to happen. It was one of those matches that gets someone excited about wrestling. I never thought I’d say that about a TNA match.

For the record, I think this is my current list of top 5 matches of the year:

1. Brock vs. Cena Extreme Rules

2. Taker vs. HHH Hell in a Cell WM 28

3. Aries vs. Roode Destination X

TNA has been (surprisingly) pretty watchable (for the most part) recently. Austin Aries is also going to be in the main event of the next PPV. In honor of both of those things, here is one of the most fun matches of last year: Austin Aries vs. Low Ki vs. Jack Evans vs. Zema Ion. Evans and Ion provide lots of big spots while Aries and Low Ki help keep the match together. It was a match that I was very excited about for weeks and rewatched a lot (until Cena/Punk at MITB happened shortly after and made me forget everything else that was going on in wrestling). Check it out.

Patiently waiting to see the rematch. Here’s to hoping...

I for one love wrestling references in hip hop. Last night was the last night of NXNE in Toronto, and the outdoor free show was Raekwon & Ghostface/Killer Mike/Action Bronson. I know Bronson had an Owen Hart reference, but the highlight was Killer Mike doing a speech on how he grew up watching wrestling and specifically Ric Flair. The crowd of around 800-1000 people kept chanting WOOOO! Here is the track.

If the only exposure you have to Michinoku Pro is something like the 6-man tag from Barely Legal 97 or Taka’s/Kaientai’s WWE runs, check this match out. It features Great Sasuke, Sato (the legendary Dick Togo), and Shiryu (Kaz Hayashi vs. Super Delfin, Gran Naniwa, and Jinsei Shinzaki. It has a lot of well put together comedy spots that Michinoku pro is known for, but it also has some great wrestling, and is just one of the most fun matches you’ll see. If you like stuff like Chikara, this is worth checking out for sure.

Great Sasuke/Sato/Shiryu vs. Super Delfin/Jinsei Shinzaki/Gran Naniwa

Not in my top 10 of MPro matches from this time period, but you really can’t go wrong with any of their multi-tags from about ‘94 to late ‘96. And I’m still convinced that after 1997, someone else is under the Naniwa mask. Either that or Sasuke pulled him aside and told him to get his shit together or else he was headed for Dirt Bike Kid levels of punishment.

If you want to point me in the direction of stuff you’d consider better, I’m all ears!

Both of us here at A Matter of Life and Dr. Death think of Vader as one of our favorite wrestler’s. I marked out a bit when he appeared on Raw and looked pretty awesome while doing so. In his honor, here is on of the most legendary Vader matches: vs. another favorite, Stan Hansen, in 1990. This is the match where Stan Hansen almost pops Vader’s eye out. So brutal.
